The
Matinecock Rod and Gun Club was founded in the spring of 1945 just
prior to the end of World War Two. It was started by a dedicated group
of sportsmen who lived on the north shore of Nassau County and had
spent all their lives hunting, fishing and trapping. |
| |
| The
goal of this new organization was to bring together like minded individuals
to foster fellowship and to carry on in the spirit of another great
Long Islander, Theodore Roosevelt. Like the President, they were concerned
with the preservation of the environment and the propagation of fish
and game. Things like clean air and water and teaching young people
to appreciate outdoor activities were very important to them. |
| |
| Over
time the club came to be a well respected part of the Glen Cove community.
|
| |
| We
participated in parades, as we do to this day. We participated in,
and sponsored, children’s fishing derbies. We conducted New York State
hunter safety courses and, in general, educated the public about the
importance of safety with firearms and the vital part hunters and
fishermen play in preserving wildlife. |

|
The club held its meetings in various locations over the years. As
the club grew it became obvious that it would be in the club’s best
interest to have a permanent home of our own. Fortunately for all
of us, a group of visionary men within the club stepped forward to
take on the task of turning a dream into reality. In 1966 after a
long series of starts and stops and after a long series of negotiations,
the land and clubhouse we currently enjoy was purchased from the estate
of J.P. Morgan. |
| |
In order to finance the purchase, all members were assessed three
hundred dollars. It was a sizeable sum that was a hardship for many
members. Nevertheless, the money was raised and the deal was concluded.
A great many of our members enjoy deer and turkey hunting upstate. In
addition we operate a regulation Skeet range on the grounds of the
Welwyn Preserve in Glen Cove. |
| |
| This
very brief description of our club illustrates what a rich and lengthy
history we have. The men and women who have made this organization
what it is today have earned our respect and admiration. With the
continuing effort of many fine people, the best is yet to come! |
